At 11:26 a.m. Friday morning, Dick Johnson Township and Van Buren Township Volunteer Fire Departments were sent to a structure fire at 14686 Poplar Avenue in Carbon.

The Steve Downing residence is located immediately north of the Carbon Fire House.

Two witnesses at the scene, Charlie Fox and his father, Charles R. Fox, were in the area performing a survey when the alarm at the fire house sounded.

The brick home was fully engulfed in smoke as the truck arrived before the alarm shut off, they said.

Trans-Care was called to the scene, but a victim and young child at home at the time of the fire got out of the structure without injury.

They were shook up by the incident, and missing their shoes, but safe.

The home suffered extensive smoke and moderate fire damage, but a cause had not been released by fire officials at press time due to an investigation.

The investigation is part of state protocol requirements for any fire in a firefighter's residence.
