Clay City resident Pearl L. "Leonard" Lucas, 67, died from injuries sustained in an accident on Connelly Ditch Bridge, two miles north of Clay City, early Wednesday morning.
According to witnesses, Lucas was driving his 2003 Ford Focus south on S.R. 59 when a 1995 Dodge Intrepid driven by Rodney R. Shipley, 23, of Linton, apparently crossed the center line on the bridge, hitting Lucas' vehicle head-on.
Lucas was air-evacuated by Air Evac Life Team to Methodist Hospital, but, due to the nature of his injuries, died later in the morning.
Shipley was transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
Traffic was re-routed for more than three hours as the accident was cleared away.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Clay County Sheriff's Department is being assisted by an Indiana State Police accident reconstructionist to determine the cause of the early morning collision.
Clay County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police, Clay County Search and Rescue, Clay City/Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department, Clay City Police Department, Trans-Care Ambulance, Air Evac Life Team and Red Bird Garage responded to the scene.
