School year time constraints boost summer school offerings

Monday, March 14, 2005

As the end of the school year draws closer, students begin thinking about the simple joys of 81 days of warm weather fun without books and teachers, otherwise known as summer vacation.

But for many secondary students their summer vacation is interrupted with summer school.

"There's just not enough time in the regular school day for many students to participate in an extra-curricular activity or other elective course choices with the stricter CORE 40 requirements," said Kathy Knust, Curriculum Coordinator for Clay Community Schools. She believes students that participate in summer school classes, especially the Freshmen Physical Education, "open up their class options during the regular school year."

Clay Community School Corporation determines the need for summer school classes at the end of the second semester.

Some of the classes on the schedule for this summer are Pre-Algebra and Algebra I, High School English and Drivers Education. A Freshman Physical Education program will also be available for Northview students.

Students at Northview and Clay City High School will be able to attend these classes from May 31 through June 24.

Northview students will take their classes at the North Clay Middle School facility, while Clay City students will attend classes at Clay City High School.

During August 1-12, Jump Start Remedial Math and English classes will be provided at Northview, Clay City and North Clay Middle School.

This is the first year for North Clay Middle School students to be able to register for the Jump Start classes. Educators feel that getting a head start on the mechanics of Math and English will help students have greater success during the school year.

Title 1 Summer School will also be available from July 6-20 with classes at Forest Park Elementary.

Normal textbook and class registration fees will apply for all summer classes.
