Clay Community School Board weighs 16 options

At Thursday evening's Clay Community School Board of School Trustees meeting, Superintendent William Schad and Director of Business Randy Burns presented the school board, and the attending crowd, with a list of 16 options to consider during the present financial crisis.

The proposed options for budget cuts are as follows, along with Schad's recomendations and the board's voting record:

1. Use Respect Grant to fund half of the nurse's salary. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 7-0 vote.

2. Reduce 15 staff positions. Recommended by Schad, the board wanted clarification on statistics before placing vote. Statistics are expected at the next meeting.

3. Instead of providing the incentive funds from the Academic Honors Diplomas program to the students, return the money to the school corporation to fund the classes. Recommended by Schad, defeated by the board in a 3-4 vote.

4. Eliminate extended contract positions. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 7-0 vote.

5. Eliminate the excess coaching staff from the elementary ECA budget. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 6-0 vote and 1 abstention.

6. Eliminate the excess coaching staff from the secondary ECA budget. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 7-0 vote, but with a request for clarification at the next meeting.

7. Have the athletics program pay for the custodians' overtime wages when they clean up after a sporting event. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 6-1 vote.

8. Elimination of Administrative Assistant/Counselor at Clay City High School. Not recommended by Schad, the board did not consider a vote.

9. Hiring freeze on future staff positions. Recommended by Schad, the board agreed without vote since the option is already taking place.

10. Move the General Fund 010 Position and move to the Special Education Preschool fund. Recommended by Schad, accepted by the board in a 7-0 vote.

11. Elimination of Administrative Assistant position at Central Office. Recommended by Schad, the board agreed without vote since the option is already taking place.

12. Eliminate Instructional Assistant through attrition. Recommended by Schad, the board agreed without vote since the option is already taking place.

13. Coordinator funds out of various grant funding. Not recommended by Schad, the board did not consider a vote.

14. Elimination of a media specialist. Not recommended by Schad, the board did not consider a vote.

15. Elimination of excess Summer School Regular positions. Not recommended by Schad, the board did not consider a vote.

16. Elimination of excess Summer School Drivers Education positions. Not recommended by Schad, the board did not consider a vote.
