Mayor Tom Arthur announced this week the city has formally renamed Penn St. after former resident Boone Dunbar.
Last week, the city erected a sign establishing the street's new name as Boone Dunbar Drive. The drive three blocks long on the city's north side was home to Dunbar for several years.
Dunbar, a self-taught musician, learned to read music and play both the trumpet and drums. He was uniquely entertaining and created his trademark Booneaphone, which consisted of a brass horn and kazoo in a thin mouthpiece.
"He did a lot with music in the community," the Mayor said.
He explained that while he didn't know Dunbar personally, the Brazil City Council passed an ordinance to rename Penn Street after a local resident requested the Council do so in August 2004.
