Ready to ride

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

After years of anticipation, Van Buren Elementary students have new playground equipment.

This month, equipment manufactured by Serendipity Play Systems, Evansville, Ind., was installed.

When Van Buren Elementary removed the old playground equipment a few years ago due to insurance issues, the students were disappointed, but they were also excited at the prospect of new equipment.

The expense was a major one that took 2 1/2 years of fundraising efforts such as fall carnivals, fish frys and many other efforts at the school to collect enough funding to replace the old equipment.

"We spent $4,600 last year to install a Physical Fitness center, Dome Climber and a Pike's Peak climber at the playground," Stevenson said. The new multi-slide is the last purchase for the playground.

"This piece cost $8,500. But it isn't just one slide, it is six slides when it is put together."
