Funding for new bridge

Tuesday, May 24, 2005

Staunton Elementary fourth-grade students were so upset that a part of Indiana's history was destroyed by arson in April, they decided to do something about it.

"Many of the students came in the morning of the fire wanting to do something to help right away," fourth-grade teacher Evelyn Greenwood said. "They came up with the idea for a fundraiser that would raise money to buy boards for the reconstruction of a new bridge in Bridgeton."

Using a paper bridge as a display in the main hallway of the school, students began raising money. For every $10 in donations raised by the school another paper board was placed on the display.

The students raised $220 to rebuild the historic covered bridge by the time the effort ended on Friday.

"They understand that they are helping to replace a part of history," Greenwood said. "One day in the future these students will be able to take their children to Bridgeton and tell them how they helped turn a tragedy into something special."
