"Asphalt is not perfect, it needs maintenance," said Jack Kirk, owner of Indiana Asphalt & Pavement Coating, Inc. The company performed the $6,500 worth of repairs to the track. "A small area on the curve of the northeast corner of the track was damaged due to normal use by go-karts. It was a minor problem that was fixed in a few minutes."
The go-kart track is a major attraction during the summer.
"During the last few years there have been over 200 carts participating in the races," Past President and current Rotary Board Member Sam Crawn said. This summer's free go-kart races will take place on June 18 and 19 as a pre-event to the Brazil Rotary Club's 4th of July Celebration, which starts June 25 and ends with the fireworks display on July 4.
The repairs to the track will benefit more than just the go-kart races, making a nicer track for walkers exercising in the park throughout the year and easier access for handicapped visitors who use Shelter No. 4 located next to the staging area.
"It was an added benefit for the park," Crawn said of the improved staging area that now measures 110 feet long. "It will definitely be easier for wheelchairs to get in and out of the shelter now."
