A Brazil man who plead guilty to importuning with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl on the Internet has his final disposition hearing scheduled for July 7 in Greene County, Ohio.
Gary Mosteller, 58, of 2748 U.S. 40, "was arrested Jan. 31 by me," said Fairborn, Ohio, Police Department Detective Lee Cyr.
A few weeks prior to Mosteller's arrest, Mosteller had conversations online with Cyr who he thought was a 14-year-old Fairborn girl. During this time, Mosteller sent Cyr photographs of himself. Some of the photographs were appropriate and others were inappropriate, Cyr said.
With the help of the photographs Cyr immediately nabbed Mosteller when he traveled from Brazil to Fairborn, Ohio, to meet "the girl" for sexual purposes, he said.
Importuning is a fifth-degree felony, according to information from the Greene County Courts.
Phone calls from the Greene County, Ohio, Prosecutor's Office were not immediately returned to The Brazil Times.
"It was a pretty cut and dried case," he said, although they are becoming more common, he said.
"I wish it wasn't happening as frequently as it is, but that's the case," Cyr said.
"Unfortunately there's no shortage of clientel," he said. Cyr has talked to 5,500 in the last year and "more than half of them if not 3/4 solicited sex." However, not all of them show up for their arranged meetings.
Between the Fairborn and Xenia law enforcement departments over 100 individuals have been arrested in the last year and a half, Cyr said.
Pre-Sept. 11 this was an issue the Federal Bureau of Investigation would have handled, but now they are increasingly concerned with Homeland Security.
Post-Sept. 11, Cyr said local police departments across the country have been stepping up where the FBI left off. He consistently networks with different law enforcement agencies across the country from California to Michigan to Florida.
Mosteller plead guilty to importuning on May 13.
