While traveling eastbound on U.S. 40 shortly before 8 a.m. today, a motorcyclist drove into the back of a Growers Co-Op sprayer turning into a field on the south side of the road.

When Clay County Sheriff's Department personnel arrived on the scene, the victim, who had a helmet but was not wearing it at the time of the accident, was alert but had sustained extensive injuries. The victim's name has not been released as of press time.

Law enforcement personnel confirmed that witnesses at the scene reported that both the driver of the motorcycle and the sprayer were properly operating their vehicles and that speed was not a known factor at this time. The investigation into the accident would continue.

"People need to realize that it is farming season and these vehicles are very slow moving," Sheriff Mike Heaton said, urging motorists to be cautious. "It is very easy to misjudge how quickly you're coming up on these vehicles."

Clay County Search and Rescue, Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Trans-Care Ambulance and Redbird Garage also responded to the scene.
