The Van Buren Memorial Wall is now complete and the construction materials removed.
The wall uses some of the signage from the original Van Buren High School with new bricks surrounding and supporting the heavy stone signs. From the south, the wall has two projecting rectangles at each end reminiscent of the south walls of the old building. The old VB had the doors symmetrically inset between them. Rectangular openings give the impression of the windows that faced the front of the building.
Tim Williams was in charge of the project with help from several members of the community.
Some landscaping has been started to create the courtyard that will eventually surround the Memorial Wall. A circle of evergreens has been planted to the north of the wall. Other plans for walkways and plantings are to be completed by the time school starts in the fall. Students will continue the courtyard as they use it for a living classroom. Each class will continue to add plants and check the progress of previous efforts.
A special ceremony is planned to invite the public to view the memorial but motorists can now drive by the school and view the completed wall.
