Cell phones not being used by telemarketers

Tuesday, June 21, 2005

Cell phone users do not need to be concerned about telemarketers, according to a spokesperson for the Indiana Attorney General's office.

Information circulating about the release of mobile phone numbers, some including a phone number for mobile phone users to call to put themselves on another "do not call" list for cell phones, has been confirmed a rumor by Staci Schneider of the Indiana Attorney General's Office.

"It's a rumor that got started and I'm not sure how," she told The Brazil Times. "It goes around - this is the third or fourth time."

At one time, the issue was listed at the top of the list at www.urbanlegends.com, a Web site that debunks various rumors, she added.

"Wireless companies had talked about a directory - and still are," Schneider said. "All indications we've seen is this is an opt-in only situation. But things do change."

For those wireless customers concerned about their phone numbers being released in a directory in the future, she said, they should consider not opting in to the directory.
