Brazil resident drowns

Tuesday, July 26, 2005

A 20-year-old Brazil resident, Jesse W. Stapert, drowned Friday afternoon at Raccoon Lake in Parke County.

According to the Indiana Conservation Officers report, Stapert and four friends were swimming at the Hollandsburg boat ramp at Raccoon Lake around 5 p.m. Friday. Three males and two females were in the group that swam out to a buoy about 200 feet from shore. The group was swimming back when they realized Stapert was missing.

Someone in the group called 911. Conservation Officers Paul Harden and Kent Hutchins and Indiana State Police Trooper Matt Ames dove in the lake to find Stapert.

It took officers about three minutes to find Stapert's body, in 40 feet of water about 70 feet from shore, at 6:08 p.m.

The area is not authorized for swimming. It is against the law to swim on a state property unless it is authorized for swimming, stated Indiana Conservation Officer Max Winchell.

An autopsy was performed Saturday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital by Dr. Ronald Kor. The findings were consistent with drowning.
