Award-winning tennis coach now head of boys' team

Thursday, July 28, 2005

Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate tennis player, you can try out for the Northview High School boys' tennis team. The first practice will be 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1, at the Northview tennis courts.

After coaching the females' team for about six seasons, Head Coach Tom West has switched to the males' team to help them improve their game. He wants to see all incoming freshmen and current students on the court with their rackets and ready to learn or practice the game. A current physical must be available.

West was one of the first tennis coaches to be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in Indianapolis. All players have the opportunity to learn something new if they are willing.

The boys' athletic director asked West to coach the boys' team. "Since the girls' were doing good, I decided to move on to help the boys' team," West said.

In the past, the boys' team has not done very well. Hopefully West can change that and get the boys' team winning matches.

According to West, the game of tennis is a great way to get and stay healthy. He has played and coached numerous sports and ended up staying with tennis. He has been playing for years and is getting close to the age of 70.
