Friday, August 12, 2005

The following businesswas transacted at the school board meeting Thursday:

Budget advertisement approved

The board granted permission for the first publication of the budget for public viewing on Aug. 17, and a second publication date on Aug. 24 per state regulations with a public budget hearing scheduled for Monday, Aug. 29.

The final draft of the proposed 2006 budget for the school corporation is scheduled for adoption on Thursday, Sept. 8, with a final publication date in local newspapers on Wednesday, Sept. 21.

New policies

The board of trustees unanimously approved the second readings and recommendations of proposed policies on bullying, display of the U.S. Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance, providing a moment of silence for students during a school day, and policies regarding truancy and medication. Implementation of the policies will take place during the upcoming weeks of school.

Enrollment report

Superintendent Schad reported that projected student enrollment in the corporation shows signs that it will continue to rise in the future. At the end of the 2004/05 school year there were 2,445 enrolled students. Officials project that there will be approximately 2,592 students enrolled in the Clay Community School Corporation, an increase of 147 students.

Vendor contracts approved

The board approved the use of American Funds as a vendor for 403(b) plans.

Members appointed to Reconsideration Committee

The board approved Annie and Thad Burdette to be a part of the Reconsideration Committee. The parents will join the committee which considers the appropriate action on matters regarding media material and other items of public concern brought before the board.

Creation of new committee

"Because the Indiana statues regarding education were rewritten earlier this year by legislators, anything that starts with an "IC: 20" in the corporation handbooks will appear to be wrong," Schad told the board of the reason for the committee. "We need to appoint a committee to ensure that all the statutes are correct."

The board unanimously approved the recommendation with board members Jim Guy, Dottie King and Steve Grigsby volunteering for the committee.

Thursday evening's Clay Community School Board meeting was attended by Jim Guy, Terry Barr, Len Fischer, Steven Grigsby, Ted Jackson, Joe Thomas, Dottie King and Superintendent William Schad.

The Clay Community Schools Board of School Trustees schedule public meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
