While responding to a 911 call reporting an accident at 410 Main St. in Clay City, earlier this week, personnel from the Indiana State Police, Clay County Sheriff's Department and the Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived to find a 2001 Chevy pick-up truck had crashed into the front porch of the Kenneth Rubeck residence.
Jeffery Stearns, 52, of Fithian, Ill., experienced a coughing attack just before passing out, Stearns' son told Indiana State Trooper Sam Stearley. The vehicle veered to the left side of the road as the son attempted to correct the vehicle's path to avoid hitting the home, but he was unsuccessful.
The collision knocked off the Rubeck's porch corner post, causing roof damage, Trooper Stearley told The Brazil Times. The debris from the collision also flew over and damaged the house and a car parked in the driveway of the S.K. Baumgartner residence at 408 Main St.
The cost and extent of the damage to the two homes was unknown as of press time.
Stearns and his son did not sustain any injuries from the accident, but emergency personnel on the scene were unable to determine whether Stearns suffered from a heart attack. He was taken by Trans-Care to St. Vincent Clay Hospital for further medical testing.
Details regarding his condition were not available.
