Around 7:00 p.m., October 14, a 911 call to the Clay County Sheriff's Department from a motorist traveling on U.S. Hwy. 40 reported an accident involving a juvenile on a bicycle and a vehicle near the Industrial Parkway.
When Deputy Josh Clarke arrived on the scene near Great Dane Trailers, witnesses reported that two juveniles were riding their bikes in the east bound lane of U.S. Hwy. 40 when one of the boys' bikes was struck by an eastbound 1997 Chrysler Sebring driven by Jared C. Cox, 32, of Coatsville. Because of the darkness, the boys could not bee seen by traffic and it appeared that Cox's vehicle struck the handle bars of Christopher A. Shields' bicycle, causing the 14-year old to be thrown from the bike and into the median.
The juvenile, a resident of Brazil, sustained severe injuries from the result of the accident and was flown by Air Evac to Riley Children Hospital. The juvenile died from the injuries later that evening.
During the course of the investigation, officers determined that Cox was driving while suspended and operating a vehicle without financial responsibility. Cox was cited/arrested at the scene with his vehicle impounded.
The accident is still under investigation. Any other witnesses to the accident should contact Deputy Josh Clarke at the Clay County Sheriff's Department at 446-2535.
Other responding agencies on the scene included the Knightsville Town Marshall, Carbon Town Marshall, Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department and Trans-Care.
A Memorial Fund, in the form of a savings account, has been set up for the family of Christopher A. Shields. Anyone interested in helping the family at this time can make a donation at any Riddell National Bank office or drive-thru window.
