Parke Co. plans 'Covered Bridge Christmas' Dec. 2-4

Parke County tourism organizations hope you will start the holiday season with "Covered Bridge Christmas," this Friday-Sunday.

The Covered Bridge Tourist Center in Rockville is located at the 1879 Old Jail at 127 S. Jefferson St. (southeast corner of the square). Maps and a helpful hostess will be available to assist tourists with planning their travels around the countryside.

Shops, stores and specially planned Christmas arts and crafts shows will offer a wide selection of gifts for that special someone or as a treat for yourself or your home. Choose from oil paintings, dolls, toys and Christmas decorations to brighten your home. Homemade goodies like fudge, persimmon pudding, breads and cookies are just a sampling. Rosedale will have a Christmas Parade with Santa at 4 p.m. on Saturday followed by refreshments, pictures with Santa and other Christmas activities at the Rosedale Firehouse. Bloomingdale will celebrate Christmas Lights with refreshments at the Firehouse starting and the Lighting of the Town, and the Teal Trading Post will have a Christmas Open House. Montezuma celebrates the Lighting of the Tree on Saturday evening with a chili dinner at 5 p.m. on Washington Street, Santa arriving at 6 p.m. and a live nativity scene, caroling and bonfire with the Tree Ceremony.

Rockville Square merchants will have open houses and holiday specials. The Covered Bridge Art Gallery offers a chance to purchase the works of Parke County artists at their Holiday Boutique. The Holiday Tour of Homes will be on Saturday from 2-7 p.m. This year's tour includes the homes of Ron and Marcie Akers, Bud and Nona Brown, Mr. & Mrs. John Harmon, Lisa Leonard's house on High Street, The Billie Creek Farmhouse and Sassafras Ridge Pottery Barn of Judy Ohmit. Tickets are available at the Gallery for $7.

Terre Vin Winery will offer free tastes of its hot spiced wine and 15 other wines, cheese and wine accessories. Gift baskets are available, or help will be provided to put a basket together. Located at 100 West York (one block north of the square in Rockville).

In Rockville, visitors can admire the Live Nativity Scene on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the courthouse square.

The Parke Players present "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" at the historical Ritz Theater, one block west of the square in Rockville. The show will be at 2 and 4 pm on Sunday.

Turkey Run Inn invites you to help trim the tree on Dec. 3 and relax by the fire with family and friends.

As you travel south to Bridgeton visitors can stop at Sassafras Ridge for the Pottery Show and Sale on Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At the old mill and historic downtown, travelers can find the "North Pole" and "South Pole" barns. Also, there are many crafts to see in the 1878 barn and 1878 house and Case Log Cabin. Santa will be at the Log Cabin on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Mansfield twinkles with thousands of tiny lights and welcomes you to its shops and a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings. The hours are Friday 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
