New Year's Day crash sends one to hospital

Thursday, January 5, 2006

A 911 call around 10:26 a.m. Sunday, members of the Clay County Sheriff's Department and the Van Buren Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single car accident in the area of the intersection of U.S. 40 and N.C.R. 200 East that sent a Greencastle woman to the hospital with minor injuries.

Overcome by a coughing attack while traveling west bound on U.S. 40, Martha J. Garner, 54, lost control of her vehicle and went off the north side of the road, striking a telephone pole head-on. The vehicle then spun around across four lanes of traffic to end up in a yard on the south side of road.

Suffering contusions, bruising and minor neck injuries, Garner was transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital.

Receiving estimated damage of $2,500 to the front end and along the passenger side, Poor Boy's Wrecking Service removed the vehicle from the accident scene.
