Archer put the new firefighters through the paces Sunday, part of a rigorous new certification process mandated by the state. Among other exercises, the recruits were asked to find their way through the building with their masks blacked out to simulate "zero visibility" in a smoke-filled area.
"They've got to rely on their other senses, like using their hands. The guys did really well," he said.
