Off and running ... candidates' filing period begins

-Candidates' seminar planned by Indiana Farm Bureau, registration due Friday

The filing period begins today for the May 2 Primary Election in Indiana.

To help candidates, Indiana Farm Bureau has planned a Campaign Management Training Seminar -- better known as the election school.

But candidates need to register soon. The deadline is Friday.

The two-day seminar is scheduled Feb. 2-3 at the Indiana Farm Bureau Home Office, 225 S. East St., Indianapolis.

The seminar includes information on such topics as:

-Evaluating the candidate and the electorate

-Making the announcement

-Handling interviews

-Preparing a budget

-Raising money

-Using a finance committee

-Filing the necessary government reports

-Structuring a campaign

-Choosing a campaign headquarters

-Promotion

-Recruiting volunteers

-Targeting voter groups

-Using polls

-Election day activities

In addition to candidates, the seminar is for spouses and campaign managers.

Enrollment will be limited to 28 people.

The seminar costs $175 for non-Farm Bureau members and $150 for members (candidates), $75 for campaign managers (with candidate) and $50 for spouses (with candidate).
