Indiana Inspector General David Thomas offered former Clay County corrections officer Steve Bell an appointment to the Indiana Parole Board last year, according to a report published today in the Indianapolis Star.
But Thomas' offer hinged on one condition -- that Bell, a Democrat who has announced his candidacy for Clay County Sheriff, abandon his bid for county office.
According to the Star's report, Thomas, a long-time friend of Bell, has denied offering the job or suggesting Bell's withdrawal from the election would better his chances for appointment.
Bell, on the other hand, remembers a clear implication that the position would not be offered if he followed through with his intention to run for sheriff, the Star reported.
