Kindergarten round-ups start tonight

Tuesday, April 18, 2006

The first day of school is one of the biggest moments in a 5-year old's life. They're excited, but are you ready for the first day of kindergarten?

"We need to alert parents that the entry date for kindergarten is now in August instead of July," Curriculum Director Kathy Knust said.

Children must be 5-years of age on or before August 1, to be eligible to attend kindergarten during the 2006/07 school year.

Clay Community School Corporation has annual Kindergarten Round-Up programs to introduce the more than 300 incoming students and their parents to local elementary schools.

It's a way for families to become familiar with, and feel good about, the first day of school

"Kindergarten Round-Up is a great opportunity for parents to register their children for school," she said. "We always like to provide a time to meet with the principal, school nurse, their teacher and others that will be involved with the first educational experience of their child."

Knust said it is also a good time to become familiar with new state requirements for incoming kindergarten and first-grade students.

Parents will receive helpful information to prepare their child for school, like tips on making the first day a happy one, parent involvement, improving reading and language skills, social and emotional readiness and helping their child develop good self-help and motor skills.

Knust said that parents can easily help prepare their child during the summer months before school begins in the fall.

"At round-up, parents will receive materials to do with their child, like practicing letters, numbers, shapes and colors, over the summer," she said. "We want to make the first day of school a positive experience for both child and parent."
