School bus hit, but no injuries

Tuesday, May 16, 2006

No one was hurt during a rear-end collision at the corner of U.S. 40 and Depot Street involving a school bus and a truck around 8 a.m. this morning. There were 26 students aboard the bus, a spokesperson said.

The bus driver was stopping for a red light when the bus was struck from behind by a pick-up truck towing a lawnmower trailer driven by Alen Lunsford of Brazil, said Indiana State Trooper Chris Carter.

The window of the emergency exit door of the bus was broken during the collision, while the truck's front end was smashed. However, it was driven from the scene after the crash information was given to police.

"Buses usually win in these situations," due to their large size, said Clay Community Schools Transportation Director Frank Misner.

Traffic was backed up for several blocks as buses were rerouted and members of the Brazil City Police Department and Clay Community School Corporation helped clear the scene.

Another bus was dispatched to the scene to transport the students to Northview and North Clay Middle School.

"It won't take much to fix the bus, just a few days," Misner said while directing traffic at the scene. "We're just thankful no one was hurt."
