On Friday at 10 a.m., the City of Brazil and the Brazil City Parks and Recreation Board will host a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Chafariz Dos Contos Fountain at the entrance of Forest Park on S.R. 59.
The fountain, a replica of the historic fountain in Ouro Preto Minas Grerais, Brazil, South America, was a gift from the country of Brazil to the City of Brazil as a symbol of friendship. The historic piece arrived in Brazil in 104 crates of granite pieces and took $30,000 donated by local citizens to assemble the fountain.
The original Chafariz Dos Contos is in Reinaldo Square, Alves de Brito, Ouro Preto Minas Grerais, Brazil, South America and was built in April 1745.
In 1995, the Clay Community Parks Association began plans to restore the fountain. The project was completed on June 14, 1997, with a re-dedication ceremony.
The association had spent more than $30,000 in cash, materials and skilled labor to complete the project.
