Police said unusually heavy traffic may have been a factor in a three-car accident on National Avenue Thursday.

"The traffic, especially eastbound, has been very heavy today," said Brazil City Police Captain Andy Whittington.

While a line of cars waited to proceed westbound on National after the stop light at National and Alabama had turned green, a 1991 Oldsmobile driven by Clark Hartman of Brazil struck a late-model Saturn, which in turn struck a Buick LeSabre carrying a family of three, according to authorities.

"We all may have been following too close," Hartman said.

Whittington said none of the drivers or passengers involved in the accident sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Saturn was treated by emergency personnel on the scene.

The accident occurred just after 3 p.m., slowing traffic on the street for about an hour.
