Rotarian Frank Farmer places some of this year's raffle tickets into the Rotary ticket drum Wednesday afternoon. Tickets cost $5 for one, three tickets for $10 or six tickets for $20 and will be on sale throughout the celebration at the Rotary Headquarters in Forest Park.
Rotarian Frank Farmer of Brazil has sold almost $80,000 of Brazil Rotary Club's grand prize raffle ticket sales since becoming a member in August 1983.
In the late 1940s, the 4th of July celebration was always family vacation time for Farmer, who grew up on a farm in Jackson Township.
"I want to share that fun with people," he said Wednesday afternoon at Forest Park. "I just hope that young and old alike have as much fun at the celebration as I enjoyed helping to plan it over the years."
Farmer averaged selling a little more than $4,000 a year in ticket sales until 1998, when a bypass surgery slowed him down to $2,500.
"Then I set my goal at $1,500, then a $1,000 and this year I've sold about $900," he said. "I'm going to keep my goal at around a $1,000. I don't get out to see as many people as I once did."
Farmer urges young adults to become involved in the Rotary Club, even if they are not sure what the club does.
"Just come and ask someone, they'll tell you about the club," he said. "(The best part about being a Rotarian is) getting out here and having fun with the public."
The Brazil Rotary Club raises funds during the 4th of July celebration to provide financial support to 25 local charities and agencies.
The $10,000 grand prize drawing will be at the Rotary Headquarters after the fireworks display on July 4th. Tickets cost $5 for one, three tickets for $10 or six tickets for $20. Tickets will be on sale until time for the drawing.
