- Richard Thompson will face Andy Thomas in Nov. 7 general election for District 44
The Clay County Election Office may not have received official notification from the state, but Parke County Democrat Richard Thompson has confirmed he will challenge Brazil Republican Andy Thomas for his seat in the Indiana House of Representatives.
Thompson, a Parke County farmer and millwright who served for 20 years as Jackson Township Trustee, was nominated to run for the District 44 seat in a June 17 Democratic caucus held in Greencastle.
But his name did not appear on the list of election filings published last week by the election office, something that caught the attention of Thompson and other area Democrats, several of whom called The Brazil Times to point out the oversight.
According to Deputy County Clerk Beth Mallinak, he was omitted because the office had not yet received certification of his candidacy from the state elections division.
Mallinak said Monday that Thompson had visited the election office and produced a certificate from the state confirming his candidacy, but added her office must receive direct notification from state authorities before he is added to the ballot in Clay County.
"It hasn't been confirmed to us yet," she said.
Thomas is seeking his third term in the Indiana House. He was elected to the District 44 seat in 2002 and won re-election in 2004.
