I-70 fatality causes traffic jam

The westbound lane of U.S. 40 experienced a traffic jam Tuesday evening because of an accident on stretch of I-70 that goes through Putnam County. Vehicles were lined up past the Knightsville turnoff for several hours until the highway re-opened.

A fatal traffic accident caused a traffic jam in the westbound lane of U.S 40 Tuesday evening.

According to officials at the Putnamville Indiana State Police post, two semi-tractors collided in the westbound lane of the interstate just west of S.R. 243 because of slowed traffic.

Robert L. Welty, 58, of Parker, Pa., drove his semi into the back of a semi driven by Erik A. Freeman, 37, Cadiz, Ky. Welty, who was ejected from his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene from massive body trauma while Freeman was uninjured.
