The long-anticipated Wal-Mart on S.R. 46, north of I-70 isn't open yet, but some people had the opportunity to preview the store Monday night.
Invited guests -- Wal-Mart employees, reporters and vendors -- got to see the store firsthand Monday night. The in-store Subway restaurant, the store's deli, bakery and the "Family Fun Center" were open. Sodas and hamburgers were available outside.
The store's co-manager, Lisa Heet, said the store is unique among Wal-Mart Superstores with an expanded food center, time lube express and electronics departments, a drive-through pharmacy and a vendor that specializes in sports clothing.
The store will also feature an infant department, an expanded garden center, a one-hour photo lab and a Wal-Mart Connect Center for wireless phone sales, according to a press release.
Manager Jeff Friesner said donations of $28,500 were made to area charities by Wal-Mart Monday night, including $1,000 to the Bridgeton Covered Bridge Association.
Each of the store's 425 employees were entered in a drawing for various merchandise including T-shirts, basketball hoops and a Sky Box drink refrigerator.
The Grand Opening is set for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. At that time area residents will have their first opportunity to shop at the store.
