A Brazil woman was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital after running into the side of a pickup truck while attempting to cross the road about 1 1/2 miles west of the intersection of S.R. 46 from S.R. 59, Saturday afternoon.
On its way to an appearance at a local festival, the AirEvac helicopter was first to arrive on the scene (around 3:30 p.m.), providing medical services to Patty Ann Carithers, 22, of Brazil. Concerned citizens and motorists helped stop traffic and direct the helicopter to the ground, according to AirEvac personnel.
Carithers pulled her vehicle over to the curb of the eastbound lane of S.R. 46, got out and crossed the road to retrieve a hubcap, according to the accident report by Indiana State Police Master Trooper Sam Stearley. When she turned to run back across the highway to her car, she ran into the side of a west bound 2002 Ford pickup truck used by the Indiana State Highway Department.
The driver was Robert G. Love, 40, of Riley.
Carithers was airlifted to Wishard Hospital for head and internal injuries.
