The Brazil City Fire Department will continue an investigation Thursday to determine the source of a fire at 404 E. Ridge St., according to Fire Chief Tobey Archer.
Members of the Glen Steverwald family, who were visiting a relative, were not home when the fire was reported to 911 dispatchers at 5:39 p.m. Tuesday.
The fire, which started in a bedroom, had spread into the attic crawlspace when the fire department arrived two minutes later.
"We were able to contain the fire inside the house," Archer said. "It did not burn through the roof, but there was damage to the bedroom where the fire started and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house."
Assistant Fire Chief Jake Bennett and Brazil City Police Det. Marty Beasley investigated Tuesday evening after the fire was out.
A preliminary ruling has determined the cause of the fire was from an unintentional/undetermined fire source, which means the investigation is now a process of ruling out possible causes, according to Archer.
Members of the department will return to the scene Thursday to continue the investigation.
