School bus safety tips

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

Wait for the school bus driver to signal you to cross the street, line up facing the bus, not along side it, do not play in the street while waiting for the bus, and walk away from the front of the bus, so the driver can see you.

Walking and Biking Safety: Never cross the street against a stop light, wear a helmet if you bike or skate board, walk your bike across the street, never walk between parked cars, pay attention to the crossing guard and stop signals, look left, right and over your shoulder before crossing a street and continue to check directions while crossing, ride your bike in the same direction as traffic and always walk with a friend.

Parent and Driver Safety: Do not pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing, even if the bus is on the other side of the road, make sure all riders are wearing seat belts and that children are in appropriate-sized car seats, remain stopped until children pass not only your lane of traffic, but the adjacent lane as well, driving just 5 mph over the speed limit increases the risk of hitting a child and the severity of injuries, slow down in school zones, do not pass a car that is stopped at a crosswalk, as they may be waiting for someone to cross, watch out for bicycles, scooters and skate boarders, pay attention for children entering the road when traveling alongside parked cars, stay focused on driving and don't be distracted by other activities in the car.
