The Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department's Fire Board has set up a savings account at Riddell National Bank to help pay initial expenses for the family of Assistant Fire Chief Errett Miller until insurance claims can be processed.
Miller died in a traffic accident while driving a fire department tanker to a fire assistance call on Monday afternoon.
"Our department has never had to go through this before," Fire Board President Rob Gambill said about the process of filing the claim with the private insurance carrier through the Posey Township Fire Department.
"We don't know how long it will be before the paperwork is done and the claim is paid to Errett's family."
Miller's family will also receive death benefits from a federal agency, according to Pam Bright, a spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security: Fire and Building Safety Division.
"The state will process the necessary paperwork for the family to file a claim request from the federal Public Safety Officers Benefit Fund," said Bright. "We don't know how long that will take."
Gambill said Miller's family is struggling with grief, laughing at memories one minute and overcome with tears the next.
"They are a very close-knit family and they're having a rough time," he said. "Life goes on and so do the bills. We want to help make it financially easier for them during this time.
"This family lost a loving husband, a good father and a doting grandfather when Errett died.
"The Miller family has given the ultimate sacrifice to the community, and we want to help them through this."
Donations to help Errett Miller's family can be made at any Riddell National Bank branch location by asking a teller to deposit funds into the Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department Donation Fund Errett Miller.
