Community says goodbye to firefighter

Friday, September 8, 2006

Friends, family, firefighters, neighbors and residents from all over the state will gather to remember, to honor and grieve with the family of Posey Volunteer Fire Department's Assistant Fire Chief Errett Miller.

On Monday afternoon, Miller died in the line of duty from injuries sustained in a traffic accident while on an emergency call for fire assistance for another fire department.

The Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department provided the following itinerary for people interested in attending the funeral, those who want to pay their respects along the funeral procession route or those who wish to attend the graveside services:

- Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the Brazil National Guard Armory.

Those attending visitation, or the services, are asked to follow traffic directions provided by law enforcement personnel and parking coordinators who will be stationed near the armory.

- Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.

A ceremony by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association will present Miller's family with an Indiana flag and a valor award, to be followed by the ringing of bell ceremony and various tributes by firefighters.

- Honor services at 1 p.m.

At approximately 1 p.m., volunteer and professional firefighters representing fire departments from around the state -- with at least 50 fire engines -- will participate in honor services at the armory and pay their respects for their fallen comrade by escorting the funeral procession from the armory, past the Posey Township Firehouse in Staunton and continue on to the Clearview Cemetery.

- Graveside services will begin after the arrival of the funeral procession.

A color guard ceremony, the playing of "Amazing Grace" by bagpipers, a helicopter flyover and a "last alarm" ceremony will conclude the services.
