- Local cab is not seniors' only option, as implied by TV report

Although the local cab company has temporarily stopped service, seniors and the disabled rely on a local van service, in spite of a TV news report.

The Brazil Checkered Cab Company has temporarily stopped running due to a dispute between the company's owner and cab driver.

It is unknown if or when the company will resume its services, and it was implied by WTHI-TV that senior citizens had no other service in Brazil to take them where they needed to go.

However, the Clay County Senior Center has its own transportation service which has been up and running longer than the Brazil Checkered Cab has been in service.

The senior van runs Monday through Friday and provides rides from Brazil and nearby areas to doctor appointments, hospitals, shopping and even to Terre Haute. The service also goes out to Center Point, Cory, Saline and Clay City to bring them here to Brazil as well as Terre Haute.

A volunteer at the Senior Center said that the Senior Citizens' Van service is available to anyone over 60 years old or disabled to use for a donation, and all they have to do is call the Senior Center to use it.

The Clay County Senior Center is located at 120 S. Franklin St. in Brazil and is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. For additional information about the center or the transportation service, please call: (812) 448-8848.
