Avoiding a deer in the road caused a single vehicle accident Tuesday evening that sent two people to the hospital and caused one to be transported to an Indianapolis hospital complaining of lower back injuries.

Shortly after 9 p.m., members of Clay County Sheriff's Dept., Clay City Police Dept., Lewis Twp. Vol. Fire Dept. and Trans-Care responded to an area on Canal Road just south of C.R. 1200 S.

According to official reports, the driver of a van attempted to avoid a deer that ran into the roadway, losing control of the vehicle, and went off the road, landing in a ditch on its side. All three were trapped inside the vehicle as water began to come inside.

Emergency personnel removed the victims through the back of the van.
