In his own words: Rob Gambill, candidate for sheriff

Monday, October 30, 2006

I'm Rob Gambill and I am the Democratic Candidate for Sheriff. I've spent the last 17 years learning the lessons necessary to be a good Clay County Sheriff, and I would like to be your next Sheriff. I began my career with the Clay County Sheriff's Department in September of 1989 as a Jail Officer and worked my way up from there to the position of Deputy Sheriff on January 1, 1992, in 1996 I became the Training Officer for the Sheriff's Department, in 1997 I was promoted to the rank of Patrol Sergeant, and in October of 2004 I took on my current assignment as Detective Sergeant in charge of drug investigations. My wife, Melissa, is currently the Chief 911 Dispatcher for the Sheriff's Department and has been with the department since 1990. We have spent the majority of our adult lives serving the citizens of Clay County. Melissa and I currently live in Posey Township with our children Jayme, Darci, Hunter, and Carli.

I began my campaign for Sheriff with the belief that there are three essential qualities necessary for a person to be a successful Sheriff, those being Experience, Leadership, and Dedication. I believe that I possess those qualities and I have based my campaign on those attributes.

Experience- I've been a member of the Clay County Sheriff's Department since 1989. I have experience as a Jail Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Training Officer, Patrol Sergeant and Detective Sergeant; all of my experience is relevant experience with the Clay County Sheriff's Department. I have received hundreds of hours of Law Enforcement training and have put that training to good use by putting hundreds of criminals in jail and prison. I have been with Clay County Sheriff's Department long enough to know what will and will not work. I have more experience with the Clay County Sheriff's Department than any other candidate running for the office. As your Sheriff I will put the Experience I've gained to work for you.

Leadership- I've served as a supervisor in the Sheriff's Department since 1997. I have been a training officer since 1996 and have led hundreds of officers through hundreds of hours of training. As a leader in the Clay County Sheriff's Department I have always led by example and have always led from the front. I have never asked anybody working under me to do something I have not done first. I have set a good example for my subordinates by being a hard working officer who never quits before the job is finished and one who gets results. I have the trust and respect of the men and women of the Clay County Sheriff's Department, they know that I have done the jobs that they are doing and that I am always there to help them. I also strive to be a leader outside of law enforcement. I am currently serving my second term as the President of the Posey Township Fire Board; I also serve as the Chairman of Centennial 541's Child Identification Program (CHIPS) and as an Advisor for the Clay Centennial Demolay. I have also served as the Clay County Sheriff's Department's representative to the Clay County Fire Chief's Association and have been privileged enough to assist with several Cub Scout projects. As your Sheriff I will put my Leadership ability to work within the Clay County Sheriff's Department and ensure that we continue to grow in the right direction.

Dedication- I've dedicated most of my adult life to working for the Clay County Sheriff's Department. I've stayed with the department through good times and bad and have never regretted my decision to serve the citizens of Clay County. I have dedicated much of my time to fighting the methamphetamine epidemic that grips our county and recently led the Clay County Sheriff Department's involvement in the largest drug raid in nearly a decade in Clay County. I also recently led the Clay County Sheriff Department's involvement in two major Federal drug investigations, working closely with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Attorney's Office and was deputized federally to work with the DEA. These investigations have led to the arrest of dozens of high profile drug dealers both in Clay County and others outside of Clay County who were selling methamphetamine that was ending up in Clay County. Investigations I've begun have resulted in the arrest of numerous drug dealers in Clay County as well as in other counties and states. I've helped run drug dealers out of neighborhoods and away from places where our children go to learn and play. These investigations have resulted in the seizure of drug profits that are put back into the fight against drug dealers so tax dollars are saved and more drug dealers are put away. As your Sheriff, my dedication to the Clay County Sheriff's Department and the citizens of Clay County will be a positive influence on all of the members of the Clay County Sheriff's Department.

As your Sheriff, I will ensure that the Clay County Sheriff's Department is run in the most efficient and economical manner possible. I will personally inspect all the operations of the Sheriff's Department as often as possible and any sub par performance will be immediately corrected. I will work closely with the Clay County Auditor, Council, Commissioners, and other county offices to ensure that the Sheriff's Department is spending its allotted funds appropriately and frugally. I will ensure that the war on drugs is continued, that traffic safety is a chief concern, that all calls are answered in a timely manner, and that all of the citizens of Clay County receive the high quality of service from the Clay County Sheriff's Department that they deserve.

During my campaign I set up a phone number with an answering service that people could call to ask me questions and leave comments. If elected Sheriff I will utilize a similar number to allow people to call and leave anonymous tips and complaints. I will also be readily accessible to the citizens of Clay County and to the members of the Clay County Sheriff's Department through personal meetings or phone calls.

I appreciate all of the support I have received from the community on my decision to run for office and I also appreciate you taking time to read this article. Anybody wishing to find out more about my campaign can do so by checking my web site www.Gambill4Sheriff.com. Thank you.
