Pet adoption campaign begins

Wednesday, November 1, 2006

The IAMS holiday pet adoption drive kicks off this month hoping more than 350,000 families in the Brazil area and around the globe welcome a furry friend in to their lives this holiday season.

Helen Woodward Animal Shelter began the Home 4 the Holidays adoption drive with 14 animal shelters in the San Diego County area in 1999, and now entering its eighth year has grown to more than 2,000 participating shelters, placing more than a million pets into loving homes during that time.

This year's drive runs from Nov. 6, until Jan. 2, and has teamed up with Academy Award-winner Diane Keaton and "Veronica Mars" star Kristen Bell to encourage prospective pet parents to take a shelter pet home for the holidays.

"I'm honored to be a part of such an enormous life-saving effort," Bell said. "I encourage everyone to consider pet adoption, as I hope it will enhance your life as much as it has mine."

For its record of success, the Helen Woodward Animal Center and IAMS received the Gold Halo Award for Best Environmental/Wildlife Campaign from the Cause Marketing Forum. The Gold Halo Award recognizes programs that provide resources for non-profit partners and move consumers to act out of a desire to do good and enrich lives.

During this year's drive, each new adopting family will receive an IAMS adoption kit containing food samples, coupons and important tips on pet care, behavior, training and nutrition.

"This program improves the lives of orphaned pets and may provide your family with its most loyal member," Mike Arms, president of the Helen Woodward Animal Center and founder of the program, said. "There are millions of dogs and cats of every size, shape, color and age ready to become part of your family."

Area shelters participating in the drive are the Terre Haute Humane Society, the Humane Society of Putnam County in Greencastle and Hellers Angels, Inc. in Poland.
