He was born on April 5, 1934 to Eugene Shaffer and Eva Maesch in Staunton, Indiana. He was joined in holy matrimony to Loretta Mae Smith Aug. 21, 1951 in Henderson, Kentucky. He served proudly for his country in the Korean War from 1951 to 1954.
He was employed by Twiggs Industries in Brazil and Braden Mfg. Co. in Terre Haute. He drove semi-trailers for Indiana Wholesalers for 20 years as well as Underwood Trucking, Brazil Trucking, Morris Trucking and Lakers Express from which he retired in 1996. His many hobbies included golfing, raising racing pigeons, and model trains. He spent many hours building replicas of buildings for his train set. He loved animals and is going to be sadly missed by his two dogs, Frannie and Cosco. He had a rich and fulfilling life and he lived it to the fullest. He will be remembered by everyone who ever met him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Chester Goings.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 56 years, Loretta Smith Shaffer, one daughter, Judy Shaffer Reynolds and husband David of Terre Haute; one son Kenneth Eugene Shaffer and wife Marilyn, 2 granddaughters, Anastasia Nicole Reynolds and fiancÚ Kris Ottenbacher, Marissa Sue Shaffer, and one grandson, Ryan Shaffer and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by brothers, Paul Shaffer and wife Ruth of Wood Heights, Mo., Ed Shaffer of Chicago, Shirley Hovell of Satuma, Fla., Pat Jones and husband Dewey of Indianapolis, Mary Cheek of Nashville, Ind., Harvey Goings and wife Cindy of Chicago, Carol Brodeak of Chicago, Rosetta Kozek and husband John of Terre Haute, Ind., two uncles Earl Shaffer and Paul Maesch of Staunton, Ind.
Services for Mr. Shaffer will be at Lawson -- Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave. Brazil, Ind., Friday Aug. 10, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery in Brazil.
