"The future of our country is in good hands with young people like this," 7th District Hoosier Girls State Board Member Marge Rook said about the students from Northview, Clay City and South Vermillion High School who attended the conferences. "They learned self assurance and self reliance during the week filled with fun events. One boy even learned to clean his room."
Kyle Hayes, Michael King, Michael Gallion, Dale Stoops, Kyle Grassick and Jordan Maurer attended Boys State during the first week of June, while Tierra Maesch, Olivia Kumpf, Mary Beth Tribble, Whitney Ames, Hanna Moore and Alyssia Driscoll attended Girls State two weeks later.
Each one of the students talked about learning how a Democratic form of government operates, the organization of a political party and how to use that knowledge in everyday life before receiving an achievement certificate and a $50 savings bond.
"It is truly amazing what they learn while they are there," American Legion Auxiliary President Judie Durbin said.
