Defense stars in soccer jamboree

Monday, August 13, 2007

TERRE HAUTE -- Though there still seems to be plenty of work to do for Northview's soccer programs, coaches Don Bryan and Tony Alstott had to be pleased with the way their defenses played in holding both Terre Haute North and West Vigo scoreless in a combined four quarters of action in Saturday's jamboree format.

The Northview boys played to a scoreless tie against the host Patriots, who subbed liberally during play and got 42 players into action. The Knights then dropped a four goal outburst against West Vigo in their final period of play, getting two goals apiece from Zach Childs and John Latta.

The Northview girls didn't have as much offensive success, tallying just one goal, 19 seconds into their period of play against West Vigo in the morning's action. But the Knights also held Terre Haute North scoreless while getting plenty of girls into the contest.

The Knights did a good job of taking advantage of a Vikings' squad that was left a bit shorthanded since several of their girls hadn't reached the minimum number of 10 practices before participating in an official contest.

The defending sectional champion Terre Haute South Braves have the task of replacing 12 seniors, but that didn't stop them from getting a hat trick from sophomore Kayla Liffick and getting one score apiece from senior Lauren Swiecki-Taylor and freshman Jackie Burry. The South boys got a score from Allen Keegan in the first period.

First-year West Vigo coach Juan Montanez has a young squad that is just getting their feet wet at the varsity level and the Northview boys got on the board four times against the Vikings.

For the Northview boys, Childs scored the Knights' first goal on an assist from junior Brandon Hathaway. Childs would also add a goal on a free kick for the Knights second score.

Latta would handle the final two tallies, scoring on a penalty kick and adding a goal on an assist from sophomore Drew Snyder.

Northview girls' got their score in the final period against the Vikings as sophomore Carlee Bell fired a shot home on an assist from Tylee Graverson.

The boys will see their first regular season action when the JV squad faces off against Southmont tonight at 5 p.m. before the varsity gets their chance at Terre Haute North on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m.
