A fire gutted the Shonk-Dierforf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6606 in Clay City, on June 29, but it didn't dampen the veterans' desire to rebuild their post.
"We are meeting Aug. 20 to decide if we are going to renovate the old post building or rebuild an entire new post," Post Commander Butch McVicar said Wednesday. "The building may be gone but we want people to know that we will be continuing with all our community functions and group meetings."
Although the building was insured, there are always additional costs in any rebuilding project, which is why the Brazil VFW post is lending a hand.
"We're asking for anyone who likes to eat good fish to come out and support our effort to help rebuild our brothers' VFW home in Clay City," VFW Post No. 1127 Post Commander Les W. Walden said about the Brazil post's benefit fish fry scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 3- 6 p.m. "All proceeds will be donated the Clay City post to help them rebuild."
Walden said the fish fry, with a menu of fish, baked beans, coleslaw and a dessert, is open to the public. Members from both posts are hopeful that a large crowd comes out to enjoy the food, entertainment and specially priced drinks that will be available during the benefit.
"We will be selling advance adult tickets for $7," Walden said, "and have tickets on sale Saturday at the door for $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12."
Advance tickets can be purchased at the Brazil VFW or by contacting one of the officers of the Brazil or Clay City posts.
"This is so great," McVicar said about the two posts working together to solve a problem. "It shows the fellowship between the members of our two posts. We need more of that in the future; everyone does."
