The Popcorn Festival queen contestants -- along with their mothers -- were treated to an afternoon of tea Aug. 12 at the Elks Lodge, Brazil, and hosted by the Ladies of the Elks, Sue Tipton, Beryl Schlegel, Kay McDonald and Nel Ramey.

Vice President Janice Cox opened with a welcome and introduction of last year's queen, Heather Palmer, and this year's pageant director Melissa Medaris, who is the current first runner-up.

Medearis presented each girl with a folder of information about the pageant, practices and important dates to fulfill their commitment.

Palmer and Medearis also answered questions from the girls and provided them with information about their reign during the past year.

The first scheduled date to introduce them to the community will be Saturday at a fundraiser car wash, which will take place at Advance Auto Parts, Brazil, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The girls will accept donations while cleaning vehicles.

Next week, the girls will be busy learning new dance steps for the opening number at the pageant from this year's choreographer Dana Daub, from the Dance Factory at the YMCA. They will also be attending sessions to assist them with interviewing skills and tips to get them ready to meet with the judges on pageant day, which is scheduled for Aug. 25 at Traditions, Brazil.
