Northview harriers race at Rushville Invitational

Monday, August 27, 2007

RUSHVILLE -- The Northview cross country teams have gotten an up close and personal look at some of the state's top programs recently after competing in the Terre Haute South Early Bird meet last weekend and traveling to Rushville for the 15-team invitational.

Columbus North's boys' team upended second-ranked Bloomington North by a single point 48-49 though the Cougars' Tim Schoch was the individual winner by 15 seconds over the Bulldogs' John Pence.

The Bulldog girls also were victorious, beating the Cougar girls by a comfortable 16 points as East Central's Kristal Studer won the individual race in 19:32 to beat out Bloomington North's Molly Hirt.

The Northview girls got a top effort from Kylee Thacker who ran to a third-place finish behind Hirt in a time of 20:08. The Knights also were fourth as a team with 159 points.

"The girls followed the race plan and ran a very smart race," commented coach Ryand Tucker. "They are adapting well to the new distance. Kylee ran a very smart race following Molly Hirt and Kristal Studer at the front for the entire race."

The key to the overall success of this squad down the road will be how the team solidifies their pack running amongst their 2-3-4-5 runners however and Tucker saw good things on Saturday.

"I was extremely pleased with the performances of Allie True, Corey Laue, and Marissa Bryan. Each cut large amounts of time off of their season bests and set personal records (Allie 24 seconds, Corey 27 seconds, Marissa 56 seconds.) The weather was warm, humid, and breezy, not ideal but good enough for late August."

Corey Laue came through with a 32nd place finish with Casandra Barnett just behind in 38th. Allie True was 40th ahead of a 46th place run from Jennifer Jeffers with Bryan in 73rd.

The Northview boys were led by a 20th place finish from Chris Smith in 17:48 followed by a 23rd place by Ryan Lutes in 23rd at 18:00. Connor Strain was 37th in 18:36 with Eli Kirby in 61st, Kolby Henke was 68th, Landry Moore was 78th and E.C. Moody was 90th.

As a team, the Knights placed eighth with 209 points tied with Jennings County.

The Knights will host Terre Haute North and North Central on Tuesday in one of just two home meets this season at Craig Park. The Patriots' girls team bring a No. 16 ranking to Clay County in an early season battle.
