Eels open season with win at Riverton Parke

Monday, August 27, 2007

MONTEZUMA -- Though they might possibly be the last cross country team in the area to start their season, the Clay City Eels got a familiar result in their first real action on Saturday at the 14th Riverton Parke Invitational.

The Clay City boys' team won on the strength of their sixth runner's placing as Jared Tiefel placed 23rd for the Eels and South Knox' Michael Deeter was 25th.

Both teams scored 53 team points, but the Eels earned the victorious nod on Tiefel's better finish.

Though they were missing a varsity regular in Parker Modesitt due to injury, the Eels still got some top efforts from Braxton Griffith who ran to a fourth place finish to lead the team. His time of 19:07 was three seconds behind third place.

Jesse Vansickle was eighth and was in a tight pack that saw the No. 7-8-9 runners all just a second apart. Kevin Cook was 11th for the Eels followed by Conner Modesitt in 16th, Ben Dickey in 17th, Jared Tiefel in 23rd and Austin Sinders took 26th.

The overall winner in the boys' race was North Central's Ethan Jacob in 18:27 to beat out South Knox' Brandon Groves.

The girls race was won by Linton who edged out South Knox 75-76 and the individual race was won by Mary Mattern of Attica in 23:34.

The Clay City Eels didn't field a girls' team in the varsity race.

In the JV race, Kyle Yocom was third for the Eels in 21:24.

"It was a very muddy course," commented coach Keith Jones about the meet that was delayed by rain and lightning in the morning. "It rained a lot and the race was delayed an hour. It was a miserable type of day, but we got the meet in and a win."

The Eels travel to the Edgewood Invitational on Tuesday evening at 4:30 p.m.
