Knights double down at Forest Park

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Carli Coughanowr watches a putt during Monday's match.
The last two matches for the Northview Knights might be considered a bit of an oasis in the midst of what has been a season spent mostly making road trips.

After opening the season on a five-match road trip before hosting Jasper and Washington. They then went right back on the road for another five matches before their recent two match swing. But after Monday's match, the Knights won't return to Forest Park until Sept. 11.

Not coincidentally, the Knights have had some success in their home matches, splitting last week's matchup with Terre Haute South and North. On Monday however, they picked up two wins against Cascade and South Vermillion.

Northview shot a team round of 182 to beat out Cascade's 191 and the Wildcats' 244.

"We played pretty well tonight," commented coach Josh Trout of his team's round. "Mandy (Thomlinson) and Olivia (Oehler) had another solid night."

Indeed, Thomlinson shot a 45 and Oehler followed with a 46 for the Knights who were led by Mary Beth Tribble's 39.

"We're definitely playing more consistently and shooting in a reasonable range. Our putting is greatly improved and most of our girls are getting 20 or less putts," commented Trout.

Coming in with a 52 was Savanah Pursell and Carli Coughanowr made an 11-stroke improvement from her last match at Forest Park. On Monday, she shot a 56 in the victory for the Knights who also got a 58 from Sarah Bunch. Both Ali Rentschler and Ali Trout came in with a 61, Allie Melega carded a 66 and Shelby French added a 70.

As the season has progressed, Trout feels that his team has shown increased depth throughout the lineup.

"I think that our confidence is building, including our junior varsity, as we approach the WIC (tourney) and sectional. We're getting over some of our first-year jitters and they are coming into their own and the girls are finding their roles on the team."

The Knights next match will come Thursday when they travel to Edgewood for a 4:30 p.m. meeting with the Mustangs.
