The girls team ran a strong race in coming up just a point short of the Braves (28 to 29) and were led by junior Kylee Thacker who was the individual winner in a time of 21:00.
Despite losing the team battle to the Braves, Northview girls' coach Ryand Tucker didn't take much stock in the final results.
"We had a hard practice yesterday and we were training through the meet for the weekend (at the State Preview Meet at LaVern Gibson Course). The girls did what I told them to do, today we just got bested."
Casandra Barnett's third place finish nearly catapulted the Knights into a win after making an impressive rise through the pack in the second half of the five-kilometer race. Running in sixth place heading into the final two-kilometers, Barnett slowly picked off a pair of Terre Haute South runners to finish behind the Braves' Kristy Twitchell who was nearly two minutes behind Thackers' winning time.
"Casandra put forth a really great effort," commented Tucker. "She's really taken it to heart what I've been saying about finishing strong. As soon as we can get all the girls to do that we'll be where we should be."
Corey Laue crossed the finish line in fifth place, beating temperatures that rose above 95 degrees on the Craig Park Course.
Northview's Allie True placed ninth for the Knights with a time of 24:45 and Jennifer Jeffers and Marissa Bryant were 14th and 15th.
The boys' race shaped into a dual between South's Andrew Sullivan and Northview's Chris Smith over the first three kilometers. But in the end, Sullivan was able to stretch out a 13-second victory over the final mile of the race to finish in 17:45. Smith was the runnerup in 17:58 followed by North Central's Ethan Jacob at 18:04.
Terre Haute South was the team winner with 21 points to beat Northview's 36.
"Overall we did pretty well," commented Northview boys' coach Chad Smith of his team which was missing Landry Moore due to illness.
"If we would have had Landry we might have gone 2-3 instead of 2-6, which could have changed things."
Smith also commented on his runner's second place finish.
"Chris had a great race and Ryan (Lutes) did too. With the temperatures, everyone was about a minute slower, but we take into consideration that we're using this as a workout for Saturday."
Lutes was the sixth place finisher overall in 18:54 and the Knights got a 9-10 finish from Connor Strain and Eli Kirby. Placing 13th was Kolby Henke with E.C. Moody in 17th and Jordan Maurer in 20th.
With the temperatures playing a big role in the times at Craig Park, Tucker assessed his team's efforts toward the end of the race.
"All of our girls finished well and I think that says something about our heart. All of these girls have guts. Not just the No. 1 girl, but all the way through five and six."
The Knights are preparing for the State Preview Meet to be held on Saturday. Annually, this meet hosts many of the state's top-ranked programs who will have the chance to run on the state championship course this weekend at the LaVern Gibson Course.
