Officials say driver fatigue caused accident

Friday, September 7, 2007

Officials believe driver fatigue was the cause of a Friday morning single vehicle accident on County Road 500 West that sent a Riley woman to the hospital.

According to Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Frazier, Alice Barnard, 62, used her cell phone to report the accident shortly before 10 a.m.

Apparently Barnard's vehicle crossed the centerline of C.R. 500 W., left the east side of the road and struck a drainage culvert, traveling approximately 225 feet before stopping.

Partially trapped against the steering wheel, Barnard was complaining of lower back and leg pain as members of Posey Township Volunteer Fire Department and Clay County Search and Rescue helped her out of the 2002 Chrysler Sebring.

Before leaving the scene with TransCare personnel for the hospital, Frazier said Barnard told him she thought she might have fellen asleep shortly before the accident.

The accident remains under investigation.
