Auditor announces homeowners may file

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

Clay County Auditor Mary Jo Alumbaugh recently announced that the window for homeowners to file for various deductions and credits has been opened by Governor Mitch Daniels.

Alumbaugh said that Daniels took action on Sept. 5 that will help homeowners get property tax relief in 2008.

To be eligible for the various deductions available for 2008, persons must be the owner of their residence as of March 1, 2007. The deadline to file for these deductions was June 10, 2007. Exemptions that have been filed prior to June 10 and after that date this year will need not re-file.

Daniels will reduce the assessed value (taxable value) of the homeowner's property. The reduction in the assessed value will result in a reduction of property taxes being paid by the homeowner.

"The easiest way for property owners to place money back into their pockets is through the filing of deductions that are available to each property owner," Alumbaugh said. "Each deduction has certain requirements that must be met, and the auditor's office is here to serve and assist the public."

The different property tax deductions available to property owners include:

* Homestead Standard Deduction -- Homestead Credit,

* Mortgage Deduction,

* Over 65 Age Deduction,

* Disability Deduction,

* Blind Deduction,

* Disability Veteran Deduction,

* Solar Energy Heating or Cooling Systems Deduction,

* Wind Power Device Deduction,

* Hydroelectric Power Device Deduction, and

* Geothermal Device Deduction.

Alumbaugh is encouraging all property owners to review their property tax statement to verify the property tax deductions they are currently receiving.

If they have any questions or concerns, the owners should call 448-9001 or stop by the auditor's office, located on the first floor of the Clay County Courthouse. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
